Christopher Evan Welch (Peter Gregory), died of lung cancer in December 2013 at the age of 48 and after having only shot 5 of the 8 planned episodes of season one. Instead of recasting his role (since the series had not premiered yet), they decided against it because of the quality of his performance. So the writers wrote Peter Gregory out of appearing in the last few episodes of season one. They also replanned season two to feature his death in the first episode.
