As noted above, the first film adaptation of "Anne of Green Gables" (1919) starred Mary Miles Minter Mary Miles Minter, who was 17 years old at the time of her portrayal of Anne. What's not mentioned is that Mary Miles Minter fell in love with her director in that film, William Desmond Taylor, who was thirty years older than Ms. Minter. In 1922, Minter was involved in scandal surrounding Taylor's murder. Gossip implicated Ms. Minter's mother and, although no charges were filed, Mary Miles Minter's reputation was stained, and she tarnished, and she gave up her movie career shortly thereafter.
