Russell Crowe claimed that the shooting script was highly incomplete and many scenes and lines of dialogue were improvised between he and Ridley Scott during filming. For example, Crowe suggested that Maximus share a motto "Strength and Honor" with his fellow soldiers. In Crowe's pitch the line was in Latin, Scott determined that it sounded better in English.
