The final battle in the film is based around the historical end of the Satsuma Rebellion at Shiroyama on 24 September 1877. Like the film, the Imperial Army bombarded the Samurai positions with artillery. Takamori, having run out of ammunition for his firearms, charged the Imperial lines with his 500 men, relying on their swords. For awhile, the Samurai held as the Imperial infantry were not trained for traditional sword fighting. During this time, Takamori was shot and severely wounded. There is debate as what led to his death, but what is known is, his men cut off and hid his head to preserve his honor. The head was later found and buried with Takamori's body. What was left of his men, some 40 in number, were led by a Samurai named Beppu. They did a final charge towards Imperial lines and were wiped out by gunfire.
