The movie opened in May 1977, and by November had dethroned Lo squalo (1975) as the all-time domestic U.S. box-office champion. It then was beaten by E.T. - L'extra-terrestre (1982), but was back on top when it was re-released in 1997. It held that position until Titanic (1997).
