Mary Loos, niece of screenwriter Anita Loos, wrote Cecil B. DeMille, while he was casting the film, saying she wanted to become an actress. He interviewed her and cast her as one of Cleopatra's servants. Claudette Colbert, who had casting approval, thought Loos was "too young and too dark" for the role and suggested replacing her with a blonde actress. Loos was angry, but DeMille gave her a smaller role and made sure she appeared in every shot possible.
