The Collins family members presented during the present-day storylines (i.e. Elizabeth, Roger, Carolyn, David, etc.), as well as those presented in both the 1897 storyline (i.e. Judith, Edward, Quentin II, etc.) and the 1840 storyline (i.e. Quentin I, Gabriel, Tad, etc.) are not descended from Barnabas' father, Joshua Collins, but from Barnabas' cousin, Daniel Collins, who Joshua adopted as his own heir shortly after Barnabas was chained into his coffin by servant Ben Stokes. This was because neither Barnabas nor his sister Sarah had children (Barnabas, because of the vampire curse, and Sarah, because she was only 11 when she died). Furthermore, Barnabas' aunt Abigail and uncle Jeremiah, Joshua's siblings, never had children as well.
