When the Wraith kills each gang member, their bodies are left undamaged although their eyes appear to be burned out. This concept was included in the film with no explanation as to why it happens. Director Mike Marvin later attempted to explain the idea, likening the scenario to when lightning strikes or when a body spontaneously combusts but the fire damages nothing else around it, and this being the opposite effect. He also inserted a flash frame at the moment of each car crash, as this is the last thing they see before they die, which evidently burns their eyes out.
