This is the third film released in 2016-2017 to focus on the evacuation of Dunkirk. Their Finest (2016) directed by Lone Scherfig depicts a film crew making a film based upon the evacuation of Dunkirk while Joe Wright's Darkest Hour (2017) depicts the first 40 days of Winston Churchill as British Prime minister. The Dunkik evacuation took place less than a month after Churchill came to power.
