The series was remastered in 16:9 high definition in late 2014 with the approval of creator David Simon. Although Simon has stated he considers 4:3 to be the correct aspect ratio of the series, he had it shot simultaneously in 4:3 and 16:9 for future-proofing. Simon worked with HBO to paint out film equipment and crew members, and correct sync problems with actors in the new frame.
