When Gandalf presents Bilbo with his elvish sword, he tells Bilbo that true courage comes from knowing not when to take a life, but when to spare a life. Bilbo later contemplates killing Gollum, but decides not to. This was already referenced in Il Signore degli Anelli - La compagnia dell'Anello (2001) when Gandalf told Frodo that "it was pity that stayed Bilbo's hand. [..] Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. Even the very wise cannot see all ends. My heart tells me that Gollum has some part to play yet, for good or ill before this is over. The pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many". Bilbo's decision turns out to be a turning point, as he then shows considerable courage against Azog.
