Shortly after Sharpe arrives in India it is recalled that he saved Wellington's life at the Battle of Assay as a Redcoat and received his Field Commission. This is accurate to the books differs from the first Sharpe film - Sharpe's Rifles (1992), where it is seen that when Sharpe carries out his act of bravery he is already wearing the Rifle Green (as a Sergeant) and already in Portugal.
