Although Dory's memory issues were originally based on the theory that fish had short memories, by the time this film was released, that theory was pretty much debunked. However, whether by accident or design, by the late 2010s, the film had become what could be seen as a moving look into what would become known as "(early onset) dementia", and even actual Alzheimer's Disease, especially with Dory's struggles with short and long-term memories, and how those close to her cope with her memory "issues".
