The character of Jack McFarland was originally based on Californian interior designer Jack Deamer, who in real life had been a friend of Will & Grace co-creator Max Mutchnick for more than a decade. After the series aired, Deamer sued NBC, Mutchnik and David Kohan in March 2001, alleging that he had been promised a $500,000 house and car in exchange for allowing the character to be loosely based on (and named for) his real-life persona. Deamer stated that he was also asked to loan his sneakers for Sean Hayes to wear in the pilot episode, and believed that Jack's other wardrobe in the pilot also mirrored his real-life look. He further noted that Grace's career was identical to his own, and claimed that comments he'd made in real life later appeared verbatim in show scripts.Deamer contended that when he asked for compensation as promised after seeing the pilot, Mutchnik instead offered only his second-hand Range Rover. The case was eventually settled out of court under undisclosed terms in mid-2003, and the show was allowed to continue without any changes to Jack's character.
