T.J. Miller left the show for a combination of reasons. Mike Judge says that Miller was making it clear in different ways he didn't want to be there. Crew members and insiders say that he became too difficult to work with, and the trade off just wasn't enough to warrant keeping him around. He was often late to table reads and shoots, forcing schedules to be completely thrown off; He would sometimes arrive being unfamiliar with the script; During shoots he would sometimes fall asleep in between takes (which Miller blamed on late night stand-up gigs causing little sleep while others claim other "demons" like drugs and alcohol). The writers were also having trouble figuring out reasons for keeping Erlich around Pied Piper. His character just didn't seem to serve a purpose in driving the story forward anymore.
