A recurring joke in the series is has to do with who is Ted (Josh Radnor)'s best friend, Marshall (Jason Segel) or Barney (Neil Patrick Harris). Even though it's always confirmed to be Marshall, Barney ignores this every time and continues to claim that he is Ted's best friend.
