David Boreanaz plays Master Chief Petty Officer Jason Hayes. Master Chief is the rank for an E-9 pay grade, the highest rank / grade an enlisted service member in the Navy can receive. In his former television series, Bones, Boreanaz played Seeley Booth, who was a retired U.S. Army Sergeant Major. A Sergeant Major also holds the E-9 pay grade and rank, and is the highest grade an enlisted soldier can receive. The two ranks in the different military branches are analogous.
