Marie Antoinette's reputation was damaged in 1785, by the so-called Affair of the Diamond Necklace. The impoverished noblewoman Jeanne de Valois-Saint-Rémy, Comtesse de la Motte (1756-1791) forged the queen's signature and deceived Cardinal de Rohan (1734-1803) into buying a valuable diamond necklace, supposedly for the queen. De la Motte was eventually arrested for the theft of the necklace, but deceived the public into believing that Marie Antoinette had orchestrated the entire scandal.
