Initially series creator Gary David Goldberg envisioned the characters of Alex and Mallory as the antagonists or "villains" of the series as they were suppose to represent the materialistic conservatism of many 1980's teenagers. Many of the series jokes were suppose to be made and perceived by the audience at their expense. This was to contrast with their parents who were to represent the socially conscious and liberal baby boomers whose attributes were suppose to be perceived in a more positive light in contrast to their two oldest children. Youngest daughter Jennifer was suppose to inhibit some of her parents virtues. However, Goldberg quickly realized that both Alex and Mallory were not only hugely popular but that most viewers agreed with their views on life. Most viewers saw Elyse and Steven as being out of touch. Thus after only a couple of episodes Goldberg began writing the series to this development playing more towards the kids than their parents. Youngest daughter Jennifer was also rewritten to be more of an critical observer, independent of both her parents and older siblings point of views.
