Producer James E. Wilson conceived of the film as a modern update of The Karate Kid - Per vincere domani (1984). Wilson sought to present a more realistic depiction of martial arts instruction: he cited Daniel LaRusso's rapid advancement in rank and skill as particularly unlikely, and claimed that Mr. Miyagi's eccentricities would make it improbable for any parent to entrust their child to his care.
