There are several subtle references to the fact that while they are still imprisoned, Joy continues to breastfeed Jack even past his fifth birthday--many years after the age when most breastfed children get weaned (one of these references is the scene at the end where Jack and Ma sit on her bed and he asks her "can I?" while pulling her shirt and she replies, "no, there's no more left, sorry"). Although this breastfeeding is not explained outright in the movie, it is implied that there are several reasons that she does this. First, it provides some extra nutrition and physical immunity for Jack. It is also a way of comforting him--taking care of him emotionally and adding to their bond--and encouraging him to go to sleep before their kidnapper arrives each night. Furthermore, it provides a small amount of natural birth control for Joy, who likely would have been loathe to endure another solitary and unsanitary labor in captivity or to place another child in the traumatic position that Jack is in. While in the source novel the captor required Joy to take birth-control pills after Jack's birth, in the movie, the breastfeeding (along with the fact that her nutritional intake was likely very poor) is one of the only explanations for how she was able to avoid having other pregnancies despite being raped nightly. During a December 2014 interview with the Gotham City Networking Book group, the source novel's author, Emma Donoghue, confirmed all of these motivations behind her inclusion of the breastfeeding scenes: "It's funny, I didn't think too much about my decision to have Ma still breastfeeding Jack, because it made absolute sense to me at every level: mutual comfort, primarily, but yes, nutrition, some contraceptive effect at least at first, a calming routine for both of them... (I sometimes miss those sleepy hormones myself!) Only when someone read the first draft and reacted with revulsion did I realize the nursing would be a problem for some readers. But I was determined to leave it in, because it's a lovely example of how we officially approve of motherlove but actually set strict limits to how visceral/possessive/physical it's allowed to be."
