One of the rejected ideas for a second Star Trek movie involved a scientist belonging to a humanoid race on a largely water-covered planet investigating the water creatures called Wwafida, a race of plesiosaur-like humanoids who live entirely in the water. It turns out that the Wwafida are actually a later stage of the terrestrial humanoids' life cycle, and that they transform naturally into Wwafida when they reach middle age; the glands responsible are therefore removed in infancy. In the end, the scientist himself turns into a Wwafida through a glandular extract prepared by Dr. McCoy.
