When Thornhill goes on the run, he boards a train where Van Damme and his gang are already, seemingly having anticipated his escape plan perfectly. But Thornhill is following Kaplan's itinerary that Van Damme read to him earlier at the diplomat's house. He is exactly where Van Damme and his thugs expect him to be, on transportation that will take him to Chicago in one day.
