After receiving offers, for either NBC or ABC, in requesting an availability to star in his own series Ted Shackelford, who told TV Guide, he was planning on leaving the show, near the end of the fifth season, because Shackelford's character had believed he died. However, he then revealed that he knew his character was alive, because he still had a couple more years left on his contract, when he stayed, until the series' ending.
