He buys Betsy a record album, but doesn't bother to cultivate fandom himself. He watches American Bandstand but doesn't think to start learning an instrument, or how to sing or dance. He watches soap operas but never gets the idea to try acting himself. He writes constantly in his journal, but never bothers to attempt a novel, or even a short story.
