Hawkeye explains on multiple occasions how he got his nickname from his father's favorite book, "The Last of the Mohicans". Trapper John's nickname is never explained in the series. However, in M*A*S*H (1970), it's explained that he was caught with a woman in the ladies' room in a Boston Maine railway car. According to Hawkeye (Donald Sutherland), "the conductor opened the door, the girl looked out and yelled 'oh, he trapped me! Oh my god, he trapped me!'"
