The large dish antennae in the opening sequence are at the Goldstone facility in the Mojave Desert, a part of NASA's Deep Space Communication Network. Established in 1958 by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, these dishes are used to send and receive commands and data to spacecraft throughout the solar system and beyond. The 70m dish shown in the film is DSS 14 also known as Mars.
