Jason Isaacs had an uncredited cameo as Dr. William Birkin, who is a game character, in the film's ending in addition to playing the role of the narrator. The character was supposed to be expanded upon in potential sequels and have his backstory explored, but Jason Isaacs was unavailable for production on Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004) so the character was written out of the film. Iain Glen's character of Dr. Isaacs was created as a replacement for him, even bearing Isaacs' name as a tribute (Jason Isaacs and Paul W.S. Anderson are real life friends).
