There are many key differences between Neil Gaiman's book and the movie. Most significantly, in the book, Coraline was much more suspicious and intelligent, she could only go back and forth between home and other home via the special door (i.e. she didn't just wake up at home), and after her initial visit she only returned to other home to get her parents back.
