James Gandolfini was offered the role of replacing Michael Scott, following Steve Carell's departure from the NBC show in 2011. He turned it down after receiving 3 million dollars from HBO. Michael Imperioli speculated that HBO did not want Gandolfini to appear on the sitcom either to maintain the legacy of "The Sopranos" or because Gandolfini was working on the HBO limited series "The Night Of" at the time.
