In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in 2022, Charlie Day, like many fans of the first film, wasn't pleased with his character becoming the villain of the film, but primarily went along with it because of his admiration for producer Guillermo del Toro and the possibility of coming back for any further sequels, particularly if del Toro returned as director.
