Iñárritu spoke to acclaimed filmmaker Werner Herzog before making the film, as Herzog made a documentary about a fatal bear attack called "Grizzly Man." He was hoping Herzog would describe the audio of that attack so that the bear attack scene in this film could be as realistic as possible. Herzog declined to do so, saying that it would be far too disturbing.
