Most audiences don't realize how much a musical score can contribute to the overall quality of a film. A really good film does not have just backup music, but recognizable melodies that represent characters, situations, or recurring moods They can almost become characters in themselves. The swelling cello theme that opens and closes "The Intern" is repeated throughout the story. There's a soft electric guitar theme that comes in and out during thoughtful, meditative moments. There's also an up-tempo guitar/Rhodes piano/hand clapping theme that plays during busy or traveling scenes. "Taxi Driver", another De Niro film, "Midnight Cowboy", and "The Graduate" are other great examples of films with distinctive musical themes.
