Michael Crichton wrote the script for the pilot episode, and it remained unchanged from when he wrote it twenty years earlier. FACT CHECK: Actually they changed the section where Sherry Stringfeld aka Susan Lewis does the Babinski test on Carol after she ODs. Originally Carol failed the Babinski test; meaning lack of toe movement meant she was brain dead. (That's how Crichton originally wrote the pilot episode- he had Carol dying in the ER after OD'ing). After the network screened the episode for executives and test audiences they realized what an integral character Carol was on the show; the central character really; so they changed it so that Carol PASSED the Babinski test; she was no longer brain dead in the new version. So while the version of the pilot that was aired was close to the original Crichton script; it was slightly changed.
