The role of Mary Sunshine is traditionally played by a man in drag. In an interview with gay-interest Genre magazine Christine Baranski expressed her regret at taking a role from a drag queen. So she decided the character was gay. "That was my little secret, I was one of those fabulous '20s lesbians!"
