Felt's moniker "Deep Throat" was given by Washington Post managing editor Howard Simons (played by Martin Balsam in Tutti gli uomini del presidente (1976)) - "Deep" meaning "deep background", meaning a source that could be used but without attribution to protect the source's identity, and "Deep Throat" because La vera gola profonda (1972) was the year's most notorious adult movie.
