Even though the titular "Half-Blood Prince" is finally identified to be Severus Snape, oddly enough, the movie doesn't explain why he is called that. At the end of the book, Hermione finds out that Snape was a half-blood wizard, since his mother was a witch and his father a Muggle. Because his mother's maiden name was Eileen Prince, and Snape identified more with his wizard heritage (and aware that he wasn't a pure-blood), he invented the nickname "half-blood Prince" for himself.
