The film is inspired by the events of the Soviet submarine B-59 during the Cuban Missile Crisis. First Officer Vasily Arkhipov prevented nuclear war by stopping Captain Valentin Savitsky and political officer Ivan Semyonovich Maslennikov from launching missiles after they were out of Soviet contact and worried that war had started. That Russian nuclear sub was unique in that it needed three men to approve the use of nuclear arms. Arkhipov opposed the launch and war was averted. Interestingly, Arkhipov was also an officer aboard the K-19 whose exploits were adapted into K-19 (2002).
