Katara's name was originally Kya in the unaired pilot episode, but was changed before the start of the proper series, as it was discovered that Kya was the name of a video game character and the creators wanted to avoid a potential lawsuit. Her name was initially changed to Kanna, but her name was finally changed to Katara. However, Kya was used for the name of Katara and Sokka's mother, and then Katara and Aang's daughter in next series "The Legend of Korra." Kanna became the name of Katara and Sokka's grandmother.
