In a rare move for the company's entertainment side with Amazon Studios, Amazon CEO and founder Jeff Bezos was one of the principals directly involved in negotiations for making the deal happen between Warner Bros, the Tolkien estate and Amazon, since he is a personal fan of the book series. Bezos had previously mandated to the company's TV division that they needed to produce a fantasy series on the scale of Il trono di spade (2011).
