The role of Mr. Conductor was created as a way to introduce the stories of "Thomas & Friends". For the first season, the role was played by the original narrator from the U.K. series, Sir Ringo Starr. Ringo left the show after 1990 to focus on his music career and was replaced by George Carlin.
