The costuming department fell short on historical accuracy in several parts of the film, most noticeably in Julia Robert's casual costume when she is not teaching. In the scene where she sees Marcia Gay Harden off for her New Years vacation, Roberts is seen wearing a modern tee shirt and cardigan that fit the 2003 time period the movie was shot in. Though graphic tee shirts did exist for colleges in the 1950s, they were primarily made for men. Roberts is clearly wearing a modern woman's tee shirt. There are other scenes in the film where she is seen wearing clothes that look very modern and don't appear to fit the 1953 time period at all.
