Less than a year after The Shining was released, director Boris Sagal was severely injured and later died after he accidentally walked into the spinning rear rotor of a helicopter in the parking lot of the Timberline Lodge (used as the exterior of the Overlook Hotel). He had just returned from filming aerial shots for the TV movie World War 3 (1982).
