As of the early 2010's, there has been a lawsuit regarding the accusation that the American-based Cold Case actually ripped off the Canadian crime drama TV series Cold Squad without permission. The lawsuit alleged that this was a theft of intellectual property, and that Cold Squad was copied without permission. Despite this, both series have aired at the same time on the Canadian television network CTV. A similar intellectual property issue arose from Cold Case due to the use of popular music as background scores; without the proper licensing to allow for the usage of much of the featured music, CBS has been unable to release Cold Case at any point in time on DVD or VHS, although in late 2020, a streaming service called Roku had briefly offered users the entire 7 seasons of Cold Case in high definition for streaming. They were quickly taken down after a few months. Cold Case as of 2020, since Roku's removal of the series, can only be found in its entirety as pirated bootleg video files. Some fans have made petitions in the past asking CBS to release the series on DVD and streaming services, but this ran the risk of CBS replacing the period piece pop music from the background and replacing it with licensed music, which would have ruined the integrity of the flashback plots.
