(at around 1h 21 mins) The meeting between Fox Mulder and the Well Manicured Man reveals additional details of the agreement between the Syndicate (former scientists from World War II, pardoned in the infamous real-life Operation Paperclip to work for the US government), and the alien race known as the Grays.The Well Manicured Man tells Mulder that the Grays arrived on planet Earth millions of years ago, before the dinosaurs, in a giant UFO later that was buried in the Antarctic. During the Paleolithic Ice Age 35,000 years ago, the Gray survived by turning into a parasitic virus known as Black Oil or "Purity," waiting for the day that the rest of the Grays returned to Earth to restore them to their original shape.The Syndicate were told by the aliens that the Grays would use humans as slaves, being controlled by the Black Oil. The Syndicate agreed to work with them so that they could gain access to the virus and attempt to develop a vaccine to prevent the enslavement. Starting in the 40s, the Syndicate took a sample of genetic material from all people who were vaccinated against smallpox, creating a massive archive that was hidden in the Strughold Mining Company installations located in West Virginia (as shown in X-Files: Paper Clip (1995)).As a backup plan to the vaccine, the Syndicate also attempted to create human-alien hybrids that would be naturally immune to the virus - it was this plan that led the Syndicate to abduct Mulder's sister Samantha as one of the subjects.It is revealed in this film that the Syndicate was deceived by the aliens, and was unaware that the Black Oil could evolve and gestate as a new Gray using a human as a living incubator, killing the hosts and leading to the total annihilation of the human race.
