Jules Dassin -- a liberal being blacklisted by the HUAC and the studios -- was hunted by the studios even in Europe: he was supposed to make a film in Italy but the studios said to the actors "if they worked with Dassin, they would never acted again". So in France he chose unknown actors. If he had not been blacklisted, the movie would be probably made in USA, and it would be regarded as one of the best film noir ever made.
