According to writer/director Victor Salva the inspiration for the character of Jack Taggart Sr. was Captain Ahab in Herman Melville's Moby Dick. At one point Taggart was even supposed to quote Ahab ("from hell's heart I stab thee") in his showdown with The Creeper, but this was not included in the film.
