After Neal Purvis and Robert Wade finished their version of the script, director Michael Apted wanted the character of Elektra King to be further developed. The studio suggested that Apted's then wife, screenwriter Dana Stevens do an uncredited polish. Stevens worked on the script for three weeks, increasing the importance of both Elektra and M but this version pushed 007 into the background. Bruce Feirstein was asked to deliver a final rewrite, making sure that James Bond remained the focal point of the film.
