Kennedy refers to the Pulitzer Prize-winning book The Guns of August by Barbara W. Tuchman, which is about the forces that drove the European nations down the slippery slope to world war. This book was published just a few months before the Cuban Missile Crisis. Now, some six decades later, the book remains among the most authoritative works on the subject. It was timely that JFK had read that book when he did.
