Casting was notoriously difficult, mainly due to disagreements between director Coppola and the studio heads. Coppola at first made a list of who he wanted for the five main characters - Marlon Brando (Don Corleone), Al Pacino (Michael) James Caan (Sonny), Robert Duvall (Tom Hagan) and Diane Keaton (Kay Adams). But Paramount studio head Robert Evans and other higher ups disagreed on almost every choice and began a wide search for the best actors for these roles. Eventually they spent over $400,000 on casting and screen tests only to finally be won over by Coppola's firm stand on who he wanted.
